What is the New Graduate Residency Program?
The New Graduate Residency Program at Cheyenne Regional Medical Center is a year-long Nursing Residency program which includes:
- Paid one-to-one precepted orientation experience for 12 to 20 weeks on the clinical unit for which you are hired.
- Specialty training for your specific unit through classes and hands-on training.
- Paid monthly Graduate Nurse Residency seminars. Additional curriculum is provided by subject matter experts across the healthcare continuum and includes time for discussion and exploration of ideas and experiences.
- Several simulated learning experiences utilizing the METI mannequin system.
- Participation in an evidence-based learning project in which you have the opportunity to better patient care, learn more about research and improve the science of nursing.
Cheyenne Regional partners with UHC/AACN Nurse Residency Program™ which is built on an evidence-based curriculum that meets national residency accreditation standards. It is a proven program, developed by experts from academic medical centers and schools of nursing across the country. The program is designed to effectively support new graduate nurses as they transition into their first professional roles as caregivers in the acute care hospital setting. Core content focuses on three critical areas: leadership, patient outcomes, and professional role. All graduate nurses must meet the requirements of this program in order to be hired.
Graduates of this one-year residency program:
- Gain clinical autonomy at the point of patient care
- Are able to incorporate research-based evidence into their practices to advance safe, high-quality nursing
- Strengthen their commitment to nursing as a career choice
Requirements to apply for the Nurse Residency Program:
- Graduation from an accredited school of nursing (BSN, AD, Diploma, or Accelerated Program in Nursing) within the last 6 months.
- Cumulative grade point average of 3.0 or higher
- Successful completion of the NCLEX-RN and a current WY RN license prior to start date.

Complete Application to include:
- All required sections of online application
- Cover Letter which should include:
- Your top three areas of interest in Nursing
- Your cumulative GPA
- If you are an associate degreed nursing graduate and currently co-enrolled in baccalaureate program in nursing.
- Answers to the following questions in two hundred words or less:
- Think about a time in which you had to take care of a “difficult patient” either due to illness or behaviors etcetera.
Think about a process or a project you have worked on in the past that you were really passionate about, either professionally or academically, that took a long time to complete (more than a few months).
- Describe how you handled this situation
- What did you learn from the experience?
- What was the project / process you worked on?
- How long were you involved with the project?
- How did you keep yourself (your team if applicable) motivated?
- What was the outcome?

All applicants with less than six months of professional registered nursing experience are required to apply to the Nurse Residency Program and will be placed in care units according to the top three interests provided in the cover letter of the application.
If I am accepted to the Nurse Residency Program, am I a Cheyenne Regional employee or is the residency a pre-requisite to employment?
When applicants apply to the Nurse Residency Program and are subsequently hired by the unit manager for the residency program they are also filled into an open position within that manager’s unit. This will be the new graduate’s home unit where he/she will complete his/her precepted orientation as well as his/her residency year. In our commitment to our Nurse Residents we know that these first two years are critical to their success and therefore want them to have a solid foundation in professional nursing practice. Residents are, by contract signed at hire, to stay with Cheyenne Regional Medical Center for one year following completion of the residency program for a total of a two year commitment.
How Often Does Cheyenne Regional Medical Center offer the Nurse Residency Program?
The Nurse Residency Program application is posted three times during the year: December/January for the March cohort, April/May for the July cohort, and in August/September for the October cohort. The Nurse Residency Program is posted as a single position though there are generally several positions available in various areas for Nurse Residents. Positions for Nurse Residents are based on the availability in each patient care unit. The number of accepted applicants is limited only by the skill mix of each care unit and the number of available preceptors for new graduate nurses. Please apply JUST ONCE for the residency program including all necessary pieces and attachments to be considered. Please remember that only completed applications will be reviewed. If I am hired, what will my orientation be like?
Each employee new to Cheyenne Regional Medical Center has the opportunity to attend the New Employee Experience on Monday and Tuesday. Wednesday and Thursday are scheduled for clinical orientation, and Friday is reserved for computer training and medication administration. All Nurse Graduates will attend the entire first week of orientation and should plan on attending from 0800 – 1630 each day.
Following orientation, Nurse Residents will work with their manager and clinical nurse educator to develop a personalized orientation plan that will help them be successful on the units to which they are hired. Once the orientation plan has been developed the Nurse Resident will work one on one with a preceptor during his/her initial orientation. This period can last between 12 and 20 weeks depending on the area into which the nurse resident is hired.
What if I want to work on a specific unit?
Nurse Residency Program has ONE position posted for all applicants interested in the nurse residency program. Please indicate your top three choices on your electronic application to indicate the unit for which you hope to be considered. Hiring is based on skill mix of the unit and what type of experience the manager is considering. There are NOT a certain predetermined number of residency positions for Cheyenne Regional. Please note there is not a guarantee to be considered for applicant’s top choice of care units. Due to specific interests we ask for top three choices to make an attempt to meet your interest needs as well as to find the best fit for our nursing teams and, most importantly, for our patients.
What if I apply for an open RN position in the website?
The open positions listed on Cheyenne Regional Medical Center’s website are open ONLY to those nurses with AT LEAST six months of Registered Nursing Experience. Candidates who attempt to apply and do not qualify will be re-directed to the New Graduate Residency Program.
What if I have other healthcare experience and I am just now finishing my registered nursing degree? Do I still qualify for the Nurse Residency Program?
Yes. No matter how many years of healthcare experience an applicant might have in the following areas this applicant will still qualify for the residency program. Previous experience could include but is not limited to: licensed practical nurses, licensed vocational nurses, emergency medical technicians, paramedics, patient care technicians, nursing assistants, medical assistants, scrub technicians, home health aides, etc.
Will I have benefits?
Full-time and part-time regular positions at Cheyenne Regional Medical Center are eligible for benefits including health insurance, retirement and educational support, just to name a few. Further questions regarding benefits can be directed to human resources
As an ADN graduate do I qualify for the program? Do I have to complete my BSN?
Yes and Yes. ADN applicants qualify for the Nurse Residency Program. Residency participants who do not currently have a Baccalaureate degree in Nursing are required to start work on their BSN within one year of hire at Cheyenne Regional Medical Center.

How do I know if you received my application?

Do I have to be a Wyoming resident?
No. However, due to length of processing time required to obtain Wyoming licensure and ensure applicants are able to start in a timely manner. We encourage applicants interested in CRMC’s Nurse Residency Program to apply for Wyoming licensure when they take the NCLEX.
